The Foundation Is Good
- the angle is useful
- the structure mostly works
- facts are largely correct
- important sources exist
- the draft needs specificity and polish
AI can give you a polished-looking draft in seconds. That does not mean the draft is accurate, original, useful, on-brand, properly sourced, or ready to represent your business.
A professional editing workflow separates factual review, originality, voice, evidence, structure, and final publication quality so you know exactly what needs fixing — and what needs rewriting.
Edit AI-generated content in separate passes. Start with factual accuracy and the overall argument, then add original value and evidence, align the content with your brand voice, improve structure and readability, and only then perform the final grammar, formatting, SEO, and publication checks.
Do not begin by replacing a few obvious AI phrases. A natural-sounding false statement is still a false statement, and fluent generic content is still generic content.
Not every AI draft deserves the same amount of editing. Sometimes editing is efficient. Sometimes the original generation was based on such weak inputs that starting over is faster.
Resist the temptation to fix the first awkward sentence immediately.
Read the complete draft as a reader first.
Ask:
Trying to improve accuracy, style, SEO, voice, formatting, and grammar simultaneously makes important problems easier to miss.
Verify facts, names, dates, statistics, prices, features, quotations, links, technical details, and time-sensitive information.
Identify generic sections and add experience, examples, original frameworks, analysis, useful opinions, or proprietary information.
Connect important factual and comparative claims to trustworthy evidence or remove unsupported certainty.
Replace generic AI phrasing with language, rhythm, examples and opinions appropriate to your actual brand.
Improve order, headings, transitions, information density, repetition, scannability, and alignment with reader intent.
Check grammar, links, formatting, SEO elements, accessibility, CTA, disclosure and final presentation.
Fluent writing creates a dangerous illusion: if a sentence sounds professional, readers — and editors — may assume it is correct.
Treat every specific AI-generated factual statement as something that needs an appropriate verification path.
| Claim type | What to verify | Preferred source | Typical AI risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Statistics | exact number, year, population, methodology and context | original study, official dataset or authoritative source | plausible but invented numbers |
| Quotations | exact wording, speaker and original context | original interview, transcript or primary publication | fabricated or paraphrased quote |
| Product facts | current features, pricing, limits and terms | official product documentation | outdated or imaginary features |
| Current events | date, sequence, status and latest development | current primary or reputable reporting | stale information presented as current |
| Research | whether the study exists and what it actually concluded | paper, publisher or research institution | invented paper or overstated conclusion |
| Legal / policy | jurisdiction, effective date and exact rule | regulator, statute or official guidance | overgeneralized legal statement |
Grammar rarely separates excellent AI-assisted content from generic AI content.
Information advantage does.
What did you actually try, observe, build, measure, buy, use, or learn?
Replace generic explanations with specific scenarios that make the concept concrete.
Explain why something matters, where conventional advice fails, or how two ideas connect.
Turn your experience into a reusable decision model, checklist, workflow or system.
For building stronger source material before drafting, see How to Use AI for Content Marketing .
Not every sentence requires a citation. But the editor should know which type of statement is being made.
A date, number, product feature, event, rule, specification or other objective claim.
Explain what verified information means, why it matters, or how several facts connect.
Something you personally tested, observed or experienced and can describe honestly.
A clearly framed recommendation, preference or conclusion based on stated criteria.
Brand voice is not a collection of banned AI words.
It is the repeated editorial choices that make the content sound as though the same person or business stands behind it.
Voice includes:
Choose the biggest problem you see in the draft. The router tells you what to inspect first, what AI can help diagnose, and what requires human judgment.
Diagnose before rewriting.
You will see the first editorial action, useful AI support, and the human decision that remains.
AI-generated text is often grammatically competent even when the information architecture is weak.
Before polishing language, check whether the page answers the reader's question in the right order.
| Structural problem | What it looks like | Editorial fix |
|---|---|---|
| Slow opening | Several paragraphs explain why the topic matters before answering the question. | Move the useful answer earlier. |
| Heading repetition | The first paragraph merely repeats the H2. | Begin with new information. |
| Flat hierarchy | Every point gets equal space regardless of importance. | Expand decisions and compress obvious background. |
| Circular writing | The same argument appears in several sections. | Keep the strongest version once. |
| Missing bridge | Two correct sections appear next to each other without explaining their relationship. | Add reasoning, not filler transitions. |
| Wrong format | A decision query receives an essay instead of a comparison or framework. | Rebuild around the reader's actual job. |
Grammatically fine. Strategically empty. It gives the reader almost nothing they can verify or act on.
The improvement comes from specificity and decisions — not from pretending the sentence was never AI-assisted.
SEO editing should improve discoverability of useful content. It should not rescue a generic draft.
Once the factual and editorial work is complete, review:
For the dedicated workflow, see How to Use AI for SEO .
Google's people-first content guidance recommends thinking about who created the content, how it was produced, and why it exists.
Is it clear who stands behind the content? Does the author or business have relevant knowledge, experience or responsibility for the subject?
Would explaining how the information, review, test or AI-assisted workflow was produced increase reader trust?
Does this content exist primarily because it helps your audience, or merely because AI made another keyword page cheap to produce?
One of the most valuable editing uses of AI is diagnosis.
Instead of immediately asking for a rewritten article, ask AI to identify problems first.
| Editing request | Useful diagnostic |
|---|---|
| Accuracy | List every sentence containing a factual, numerical, comparative or time-sensitive claim that should be independently verified. |
| Originality | Identify sections that merely summarize obvious or widely available information. |
| Structure | Explain which sections are redundant, misplaced or missing for the intended reader. |
| Voice | Compare the draft with approved brand samples and identify differences in tone, rhythm and terminology. |
| Evidence | Separate supported statements, unsupported claims, inference and opinion. |
| Compression | Identify paragraphs that can be removed without losing information or reasoning. |
OpenAI's current writing guidance similarly recommends giving targeted feedback rather than vague instructions such as “make it better,” and checking facts when specific numbers, rules or claims are involved.
Check every statement that is true. The score is an editorial diagnostic, not a Google ranking score.
Select the statements that are true.
Grammar tools and spell-checkers are valuable. But proofreading is the final layer, not the editorial process itself.
| Final check | Look for |
|---|---|
| Grammar | agreement, punctuation, missing words, tense and sentence fragments |
| Names | people, brands, products, organizations and capitalization |
| Links | correct destination, broken links and misleading anchor text |
| Formatting | headings, lists, tables, spacing and mobile readability |
| Metadata | title, description, slug and social preview |
| Accessibility | descriptive alt text, usable headings and readable presentation |
Read the full draft without sentence-level editing.
Mark and check factual and time-sensitive claims.
Add experience, examples, analysis, evidence and unique value.
Reorder, remove, merge and expand sections.
Tighten language and restore brand tone.
Check SEO, links, formatting, grammar and final trust.
Some editing problems cannot be solved efficiently at the end of the workflow.
Better AI inputs produce better first drafts.

AI can generate the draft.
It can propose revisions. It can find repetition. It can identify ambiguous wording. It can suggest alternate structures. It can help tighten a paragraph.
But publication changes the responsibility.
Once the content is on your website, in your newsletter, on your sales page, or under your name, the reader is no longer interacting with a draft from an AI model.
They are interacting with your business.
